Tycho

Gabriel took Spider-Man 3 home over the weekend, in the hopes that further digestion would reveal the title’s hidden nutrition.  You have to understand how strange this is: you don’t get a second chance from him, ever.  I know that if I fail him even once, I’ll be replaced by some other writer - one whose love for commas is, perhaps, insufficient.

I’m not holding his impatience up as some pure virtue, but I think that there is value in his vicious methods.  I can be relied upon to eat the entire meal, the napkin, and even a part of the plate if I detect that - dormant within these materials - there waits some secret vitamin.  Like a dowsing rod, he is drawn with with force to quality.  I am drawn with force to games with hexes and dice and thick manuals, accustomed to long rumination.

He brought it home, went through the long install again on his own PS3, and then wept under its cruel lash.

One may chew and chew on a boot, and never find steak.  It was still trash, and perhaps even toxic.  It is our opinion that you could still lead a full, rich life without this game.  Caught in some purgatory between console generations, the game we played is quite simply not worthy of a Penny Arcade reader.  We don’t pay any special mind to review scores between seven and ten, but when a review drops below this range, we almost always pay attention.  Perhaps if scores near ten’s himalayan peak were more rare, we could invest them with greater import.

There are actually two podcasts today - a short one for Monday’s strip that doesn’t really cover the writing process, and a larger one for today’s comic that more closely resembles our other "work."  Even now, Gabriel is completing the show notes for the first of these - and later, my own notes will accompany today’s second offering.  We turn on the recorder every time we write now, so while I wouldn’t expect podcasts at the current rate, we shall endeavor to neglect you less.

I’ve got the show notes for Downloadable Content 05/07/2007. The episode is available for direct download at this link, or feel free to subscribe to our iTunes compatible feed here. It’s only about fifteen minutes long and it’s just our initial rambling in the morning. Listening to these back is really weird. I’m sort of surprised that we every actually write anything.

0:05 – The “shit” about Ian and Matt. Basically Matt made some comments at work about shooting people in the face and he got fired. Then he referenced the incedent in his journal comic and the cops showed up at his house.

2:00 – The comic Tycho mentions is “Has This Ever Happened To Yoo

6:44 – You can see the Heavenly Sword on Heroes clip for yourself right here.

7:17 – I think I’m probably a bit harsh on Mr. Spade here. I just think it’s sad to go from Tommy Boy and Black Sheep to Racing Stripes and the Benchwarmers. Wow, the user ratings for Black Sheep and Tommy Boy on IMDB are actually just as bad as his recent stuff. Am I the only one that thinks the Farley/Spade combo was pure comedic gold? The “Fat guy in little coat” bit still makes me laugh just thinking about it.

10:37 – During his search for this allegedly very funny video Tycho pulled up femenisting.com. I guess I thought that was pretty funny.

11:15 – The Pussycat Dolls show did indeed get “crazy good” ratings.

11:28 – Tycho says “G Money” here. This is a reference to a story from a convention we did a few years back. An animator came to the booth and was telling us about the latest animated movie he was working on. We asked him if he ever got tired of making movies about talking bugs and toys and he said “G rated equals G money.” Truer words were never spoken.

13:21 –I will often times argue points with Tycho that are completely opposite to my own beliefs just to make him angry. In this case I honestly didn’t understand why feminists would dislike the Pussycat Dolls. It seems to me like hating them for their lack of talent and class is enough. I’m not sure why you need more than that.

14:06 – The World of Warcraft credit card.

15: 23 – Whenever we call Gamestop we use funny voices. It started because we would often times call multiple times in a day just to check if they had received a game yet. We started trying to disguise our voices each time we called back. Now it’s just sort of a habit.

There’s a good chance you’ll see some news about Ron Gilbert working on our game popping up today. I believe a press release has gone out to all the major game news type places. The press release covers all the basics about how Ron is a pioneer in the adventure game genre and how he was the co-creator of the Monkey Island series. I just wanted to share a quick personal note about the story.

We had our first meeting with Ron pretty early in the design process. Tycho and I were getting the story fleshed out and we had some ideas about the design and over all pace of the game. We laid it all out for Ron and then he picked up a whiteboard marker and started teaching class. I’m not sure how many people can say they got a game design 101 course taught by Ron Gilbert, but that’s exactly what Tycho and I got that day. His insights into the way you move the player through an interactive story so that they get to explore the world but don’t loose the narrative were incredible. He was drawing diagrams and helping us really visualize the game in a way that had never even occurred to us. We’re ridiculously lucky to have him on board and helping us with On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One.

You’ll actually be getting another pretty in-depth look at the game towards the end of this month.  I can’t really give anymore details right now but I think most people will be pleasantly surprised with the progress. In the meantime here’s another bit of concept art. This was drawn by me and colored by Imaginary friends studios.

Welcome to the show notes for Downloadable Content 05/09/2007, "The Dangers of Exposure." The episode is available for direct download at this link, or feel free to subscribe to our iTunes compatible feed here.  This guide will help you navigate our frequently insane and often rambling conversation.

0:04 - Yes, this is the story you’ve been hearing elsewhere, far outside the confines of our ultraspecific community.

0:43 - I’m right, I mean…  right?  You don’t care that the old Guitar Hero controllers are based on the SG and the Explorer, and you don’t especially care if Fender is in for Rock Band?  My friend Joe always loved his Stratocaster, and I liked singing along with same, so I’ve got loyalty built up even if by proxy.  But I don’t think this is a huge motivator for people who aren’t interested in actual instruments.  I assume they think of Rock Band and Guitar Hero as "gateway games" that might set people on the path, as it were.  I’m curious if this ever actually happens.

1:13 - Here’s that 3D screenshot from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.  The trailer for this game didn’t especially move me, but Infinity Ward makes great shooters.  Maybe I just have to see more.

1:31 Apparently, there’s a new Spider-Man game already being announced.  Because the last one was so good.

2:04 - The Catan strip can be found here.

8:00 - The Last Remnant, huh?  On UE3?  Maybe this will finally put to rest the some of the rumors about Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360.

8:12 - 2k Games challenged the Threadless design community to communicate the strange, subaquatic grandeur of Bioshock, and many of the resultant designs are completely amazing

8:43 - It’s been announced before, and with screens, but there’s a new article about the next PSP Wipeout that might be nice reading for fans of the franchise.  The first one had some issues relating to multiplayer that were somewhat troubling - when playing with the full compliment of racers, the networking seems to fall apart.

9:12 - Here’s the Joystiq story linking to a Bits, Bytes, Pixels, And Sprites story regarding a curious review

17:21 - The Ursula/Digipen stuff (about who owns the rights to your school projects) can be found here.  Robert tells me this is common in most of these programs.

20:13 - The regrettable singing that occurs here is an excerpt from Adina Howard’s (ahem) "Freak Like Me."  No, I don’t know why.

21:12 - Yes, Blue’s News is still in operation.  Here’s the old loonygames archive, as well.  UGO apparently continues to throb?

22:22 -  The X-Entertainment article that references the McDLT can be found here.  I exchanged a few mails with the site’s proprietor a million years ago, during the Dot Combustion.  Matt is a tremendous talent, and you should definitely stop by his electronic "crib."

23:42 - My wallpaper can be found on this page, down a little bit on the sidebar.  You should be warned that this wallpaper will appeal only to a very precise demographic:  people named Tycho Brahe who write Penny Arcade.

24:16 - What I’m singing is the theme music that goes at the beginning of the Major Nelson podcast.  Sorry about that.  It’s just that when I was queuing up the audio, I heard a snip of it and then it kept going in my head.

30:26 -  [in-trak-tuh-buhl]

42:01 - I don’t own the custom physics hardware this game demands, because I’m not sure if I want to endorse some new hardware arms race.  But as a tech demo, Cell Factor certainly impresses.

44:35 - Here’s an ancient review of the execrable Timeline, based on the Michael Crichton book of the same name.

47:53 - [tawr-per] - I pronounced this word incorrectly, I always do, and the shame is intense.  And I learned it from my time with Vampire: The Masquerade, which only compounds my anguish.
