EA runs from Facebook: will shut down SimCity Social, The Sims Social, and Pet Society in June

SimCity SocialThe Sims Social, and Pet Society will all be coming to an end this summer, publisher EA announced today. The reason for the shutdown was surprisingly straightforward: “After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off,” the announcement read.

Pet Society and The Sims Social were some of Facebook's most popular games, each placing well within the top 10 for active users. SimCity Social, however, did not fare so well. While initial metrics were high - 10 million active users within the first month of its launch - it quickly fell from grace, and will be removed from service before it can celebrate a single year of existence. The Sims Social, which launched in August of 2011, nearly made it to being two years old.

Not all the news is gloom and doom, however, at least not if you enjoy PopCap games. “For players who have enjoyed our games, we will be making a special offer to introduce you to a PopCap game. You’re a valued fan and we want to make sure you get a smooth transition to PopCap. More details about that offer will appear in-game soon,” the shutdown announcement said.

So watch your Facebook notifications center. Instead of getting an annoying message about joining a social version of The Sims or SimCity, you might get an annoying message about joining a social version of Bejeweled or Plants Vs. Zombies
