F2P dev: stop saying I’m ruining gaming
I've read more than my fair share of impassioned essays on why gamers should appreciate the advantages of free-to-play games, but this one was different. It makes many points which I largely agree with, and some which are basically irrefutable.
Gamers can't get mad at game developers for going free-to-play with their games because the simple fact is that those gamers aren't keeping them in business. It's like calling the chef of a fine restaurant a sellout because he changed his restaurant to a pizza place because nobody was buying the crème brûlée. Sure, it makes the chef look like he only cares about money, but it's also your fault for not buying more damned crème brûlée if that's what you wanted him to cook.
I love that this piece puts the spotlight back on gamers. Not to blame them, but to remind them that they are responsible for the health of their own ecosystem. If you're not buying the crème brûlée, eventually nobody bothers making it anymore.
