Gaming’s strangest Moby Dick: the search for the perfect CRT display for retro gaming

This is the sort of article that begins with a relatively modest goal, to find the best CRT display for classic gaming, and then descends rapidly into madness. These people aren't into gaming, their goal seems to be the search itself. Their addiction is the quest for the perfect image.

In some ways it reminds me of ultra high-end stereo equipment, and the voodoo that those people go on their systems to get the best possible sound. I learned a ton about CRT displays after reading this article, and it's a beautiful look into the abyss of obsession, but it's also frightening in a way. People take scanlines very seriously.

On the other hand, playing classic games on a CRT is a beautiful thing. Using the classic equipment on a good display set up for gaming produces an image that just can't be replicated on modern high-definition displays. Maybe I should go looking for a nice CRT myself...
