Microsoft’s Illumiroom pushes gaming beyond the TV with quasi-augmented reality

Microsoft has been researching new ways to take gaming beyond the television with their new product/gadget/technology, Illumiroom. Illumiroom can do a couple nifty tricks, and it's worth watching this video all the way through to check them out. Once you've done that, read through Kyle Orland's explanation of what makes Illumiroom stand out, as well as some history and potential future for the tech.

The Kinect, Oculus Rift, Wii U GamePad, and - possibly, remember this isn't a product you can buy just yet - Illumiroom have all tried new and interesting ways of taking games beyond the standard single image on a single screen controlled by a single input existence they've had for years. While some of those experiments have been more successful than others, I'm glad to see people trying.

I also think it's noteworthy that Microsoft would release this video just weeks before the next Xbox reveal; it should certainly get people buzzing, and that's good news for a company that is facing some serious scrutiny over its ability to handle, and adapt to, the coming generation.
