Flash animator ZONE recently landed a job with Lab Zero Games, the studio behind 2D animated fighter Skullgirls. Normally this would be a fairly unremarkable bit of news, but ZONE is best-known for his pornographic Flash games starring various anime, cartoon, and game characters, including one starring Skullgirls fighter Filia.

Destructoid originally reported the news, stating, “While most game companies would likely frown on pornographic material starring their copyrighted characters, Lab Zero Games was actually so impressed by ZONE's work that they've now brought the artist aboard as an animator.”

Technically, this is true. Lab Zero Games was impressed with ZONE's work, but the inferred correlation is that Lab Zero was impressed with his pornographic work. ZONE told the Report that simply isn't the case. In an email to me, ZONE wrote:

“I'm just a contract animator like many others that Lab Zero hired. I wasn't hired because of my Rule 34 work, I took Lab Zero's animation test just like everyone else because I was interested in working for them. I'm no more or less important than any of the other people who passed the test, and I was hired for the exact same reason that every other applicant was. I don't want to blow this out of proportion when so many other talented animators, many of which are likely more skilled than myself, and deserving of mention will get no acknowledgement whatsoever.”

While the story of someone creating X-rated versions of characters only to go on to work on the real thing may sound pretty exciting, according to ZONE the truth is a little more mellow. He simply applied, did well on the test, and got the job.

As for what ZONE's hiring will have on the development of Skullgirls, the titillating brawler will stay titillating, but it won't become explicit. “I’m extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with such a talented team, and I hope that I can do good work for them,” ZONE wrote on his Tumblr. “And no, I can’t add any frames with nipples in them, sorry.”
