Slim success: the sales, and money, behind the indie hit Dustforce
I think we often fall into the trap of thinking that because we're aware of a game, because it has been reviewed and written about and made a part of many sales, the creators of that game have made good money from it. This issue also pops up because very few teams talk about sales information, or it's possible the deals they've signed make those conversations impossible.
Dustforce developer Hitbox Team wrote this blog post and shared nearly every detail of the cost, sales, revenue, and profits. They were able to attain the dream of most indie teams, and that's to have enough money to fund their next game. I can't wait to see what they're working on.
Still, this is a level of cold, sobering reality about the economies of game development that is very rare. I enjoyed reading it, and I learned a ton. I think you will too.
