The Humble Bundle teamed up with EA and Origin, and the result is much better than you expect
The Humble Bundles have become more varied as time goes on, but this one may be the most surprising so far: The Humble team have teamed up with EA to sell a Humble Origin Bundle, complete with a pretty fantastic selection of EA games.
Here’s the kicker: You also get Steam keys with most of the games.
“We were having lunch with Eduardo Aparicio, who was an intern from the Origin team at the time, he has since joined Humble Bundle, and we were brainstorming ways we could theoretically team up,” Humble’s Jeffrey Rosen told the Report. “It was hard to imagine how it could possibly work at the time. Since this bundle is not DRM-free or Linux friendly, we wanted to make sure that we were staying as humble as possible, only compromising when things were totally infeasible.”
The inclusion of both Steam and Origin games was a good way to keep gamers happy. “One of our major requests for EA was to let us include Steam keys in the promotion, since almost all of our customers expect that,” Rosen explained. “While forcing customers to install Origin may have been tempting, it is not in the spirit of Humble Bundle and ultimately is not an effective way to win fans. It's better to just provide a good experience and let your product speak for itself instead of forcing people to do something.”
It gets even better: Origin gave up its share of the profits directly to the charities. There are certainly worse ways to build up some good will from gamers.
This is what you get if you pay over a dollar:
- Dead Space 3 (Origin Key)
- Crysis 2 Maximum Edition (Origin Key and Steam Key)
- Dead Space (Origin Key and Steam Key)
- Burnout Paradise The Ultimate Box (Origin Key and Steam Key)
- Mirror's Edge (Origin Key and Steam Key)
- Medal of Honor (2010) (Origin Key and Steam Key)
If you pay more than the average?
- The Sims 3 + Starter Pack (Origin Key)
- Battlefield 3 (Origin Key)
Here are the included charities, which hit a wide variety of causes:
- Human Rights Campaign
- San Francisco AIDS Foundation
- American Red Cross
- American Cancer Society
A few personal notes: Medal of Honor is much better than people give it credit for, Crysis 2 is my favorite game in the series, Burnout Paradise is wonderful, and if you don't own Mirror's Edge... well, you can fix that. This is a great bundle of games, and you can't beat the price. It's also great that all of Origin's share of the money is going to charity, and including Steam keys when possible is another nice touch.
There is nothing to complain about. I'm saving some grumpiness for tomorrow. Jump on this deal!
