The new consoles are just as bad for the environment, but that’s a pretty good thing

It's no secret that video game consoles are energy hogs. For years, the current generation of consoles has been steadily increasing in energy efficiency, but they're still pretty hungry devices. Especially when it comes to one of their most popular uses: streaming video.

This new generation of consoles hasn't halted the problem of increasing energy costs in new consoles which has been steady for decades, but it's a step in the right direction. Relative to their power these machines seem to be more efficient.

Improvement is great, but this has always been the dark, rarely-discussed secret of video gaming. We've won all the arguments about the idea that gaming is bad for society, but we've quietly lost all the arguments about gaming being bad for the environment.

It's nice to see the console manufacturers taking steps in the right philosophical direction, but hopefully one day they'll be able to find a more permanent solution. Steadily increasing power cost isn't really an option in a world that already desperately needs help dealing with environmental woe.
