Treasures and traps on graph paper maps: the creative process behind Fire Emblem: Awakening

Often times, an official glance behind the curtain of game development winds up being short, shallow, and more promotional than informative. This look at Fire Emblem: Awakening is not such a glance. This is a four-page long, thorough questionairre for the game's creators, and offers a refreshing perspective on the creative process, full of juicy new details for fans and non-fans alike. In short, there are behind-the-scenes interviews, and then there are behind-the-scenes interviews.

Things take a turn for the really interesting on page three, when Kouhei Maeda explains how the team went about creating each map. Turns out, they use graph paper! All the technology in the world at their disposal, and the team behind Awakening still opts for hand-drawn graph paper maps that are digitally transferred to computer, as opposed to originating from one. Props to a team that gets their hands dirty.

If you've got time, read the whole interview, but definitely don't miss out on page three. Graph paper!
