You can’t save in SimCity, and that has turned a toy into a chore
The issues with SimCity are many, and they've been discussed to death, but this look at what the lack of save game function means to the game is fascinating. It brings in quantum theory, Back to the Future, and of course Robert Frost to make the point. These references are a little on the nose, but I'm going to allow them.
The ability to play in your city without worrying about the repercussions was always a fun bit in the classic SimCity titles, and it's a shame that EA has decided to infuse every decision with such weight and importance. SimCity used to be a fun toy, now it can feel like a tightrope walk.
It's funny, this sort of game isn't the only time I use save games to experiment. When I'm given a new, impressive looking weapon in a first-person shooter I like to go crazy with it, cutting through all the ammo and just watching things blow up before I load my previous game. Does anyone else do the same thing?
