Gears Of War 4: For The Watch Ridiculously Dramatic Promo

There’s only one way this ends:

Well, technically there’s two ways it could end.  But one of the ways is a way I don’t like.

You never know one hundred percent what’s gonna happen when you sit down to play whatever Josh has installed for the First 15; sometimes it is a game where you move a ball around.  We have been surprised to learn just how omnipresent these balls are.  You might also be exposed to Captain Forever Remix, which we seized with our pedipalps and palpably enjoyed.

You might also open up Overcooked and spend the first five minutes with your brow furrowed, and then afterward spend days and days thinking about what they had done.  And Googling for shit like “divorce lawyer” and “blowdarts.”

There are lots of cooking games, and this share their heritage: ingredients, preparation, recipes, time pressure.  That part isn’t uncommon.  Think Flipline’s Papa’s X-eria games.  The player is not present in the world typically; where Overcooked diverges, presumably in a wood, is by adding a physical player, or optimally players, and making the kitchens themselves convoluted in ways that must be conquered with efficient, effective cooperation.

There’s a great article on Gamasutra about how they recognized that cooperating was the core and then held to that, which, you’d think, “obviously.”  But cutting down is not obvious, actually - pruning, selectively refining, not obvious.  I would have done what they considered, and cut, which was to have different chef “classes” or some shit with bonuses to different types of kitchen skills.  I would have done that because I was “adding to.”  I write three panel comic strips, in part, because that stern frame tamps down my worst impulses to “add.”  Mostly.

The Pieta was made by subtraction, for example.  I saw it more than ten years ago, and I can recall it in a moment.  I think it might be a real woman.  Am I saying that Overcooked is like the Pieta?  Yes.  I think Overcooked is is a cooperative, foodservice Pieta.  Functionally, it’s Pieta 2016.

Hey, so, listen.  I’ve been making a new show with Josh over here.  A talk show kind of thing.  Think Ellen, but for videogames maybe.  Or Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, except its Tycho and The Creator Of A Game playing the Game They Created.  I used to call it ELI5, you’ll hear me call it that, but when I showed it to people they said “this is not rudimentary and is in fact kind of bigger than that conceptually so maybe Explain Like I’m 5 doesn’t work.”  I suggested GameTown 420 as a name, and was rebuffed; Kiko suggested Tycho Tries and I felt some knot deep in my musculature relax.  It’s fifty minutes long, just because that’s how long our conversation was.  I often listen to these episodes like podcasts when I’m driving, I just queue one up, and you might like that too.  Here is an episode featuring Island 359, with Steve Bowler of CloudGate Studio.

This is not what you would call it’s “final form,” to leverage familiar terminology.  I’m just trying to figure out if I’m fucking crazy or not wanting to do it.  I’ve got lots of notes on how to do this thing for real:  it’s been a living document, but I’ve got video feeds in some of the newer ones for the guests for example.  And we’ll weaponize the design department to make it look like a million fucking dollars.  At the ground floor, though, they’re full conversations between people who make things about the things they make.  I wanted the show to be real, and it was not, so I did my best to fix it.

PAX West Merch Banner

Hey there! Another PAX looms and we’ve been hard at work creating a colorful array of products for you. We’ll have two locations again. Merch Main will be in its usual spot in the Atrium Lobby. And Merch Lite will have a new, browsable format in the secret caves accessed via the Sheraton lobby. We’ll have signs. And probably a line. Come see us.

PAX South saw the debut of our Exclusives banner. And there is indeed one for this show as well.

Exclusives banner

The highlight here is of course that bright blue hoodie. But don’t sleep on that Limited Edition pin which will be available exclusively at the Merch Lite booth in the Sheraton lobby.

This show marks the debut of our New Stuff banner. We made so many new shirts in anticipation of this show that we had to create a banner just to show them all to you. You’ll see that sweet hoodie again, but also a veritable rainbow of shirt offerings that will all be at the Merch Main booth.

New Merch Stuff

Let’s review. Merch Main. Atrium Lobby in the Convention Center. It will have everything except Limited Edition Polygon Pins.

Merch Lite is in the Sheraton Lobby. It’s got all of the PAX Exclusives including that LE Polygon Pin.

Both booths will have the full sweep of alluring Merch Rewards including that Merch Pin at the top tier.

Merch Rewards

I’m really excited for this show, in part because I’m eager to get myself into one of the To Reddit tees. Hopefully I’ll see you there. Come say hi!

My Gears Team!

Tycho and I will battle at Gears of War 4 in just a few days. Let me introduce you to the team that will win.

Ryan Hartman will be the first to tell you just how great Ryan Hartman is at Gears of War, and he’s right about himself. During the previous For the Watch battle Ryan was actually on Tycho’s team. We all know how that turned out. The reality is that Ryan has always been my agent and his placement on Tycho’s team was simply my first move in the larger meta game. Now he has come home to roost and believe me, this motherfucker is going to roost hard.

Levin Sadsad is a good friend, a talented graphic designer and an ancient demon. His true name is Levin’oth Sadnog lord of the seven pits. He wears the skin of a man so that he can blend in among his prey. After we win he will drag the losers back to hell with him were they will suffer for eternity in his agony wells. Also his girlfriend is on Tycho’s team which seems kinda weird.

Van Blumreich returns to my team after helping me secure victory in the last For the Watch event. When not editing the Automata web series, he tells me he is doing Gears of War pushups. I didn’t ask him how those work exactly but he assured me they are very difficult to do and he claims to be able to do quite a few. So I told him to do as many as he can and then do one more. That’s the kind of hard ass I am.

might be my ace in the hole, if I understood poker metaphors. She plays games professionally and streams seven days a fucking week. She is a skilled gamer and a fierce competitor. I have a number of talented players on my team but Anne is the only true professional. This is what she does and she does it so well that she has made a career out of it. Come Friday evening she will clock in and go to fucking work. Victory is her job and she is my employee of the month.

The watch is mine and it will remain mine.

My Team 4 Gears Of War 4: FOR THE WATCH (4)

It occurred to me later that we could have gone with Gears Of War: 4 The Watch.  I like that a lot.  But I can’t think about all that, now.  I can only think about how I’m going to saw Gabriel and his misfit army into CORDWOOD.  Here are the tools I will use to bring about that scenario:

Kiko Villasenor is short for Francisco Villasenor, but long for Lucifer.  He and I used to tear it up on Gears back when Wingman became a thing.  One of the most underrated gametytpes in history, it took the traditional 5v5 and instead made it 2v2v2v2v2 and we were one of the 2s in that equation - the ones at the end, ass-deep in viscera.  There was a bug in matchmaking back then that made getting into a round take twenty minutes.  Or more.  Did it.  Worth it.  And now, we form the diamond-hard core of of this precision Gabriel grinding machine.

Amy Falcone, who hails from the Wytchwild. We met years ago, when she was a contestant on our kinda sorta reality show Strip Search.  What I learned was that she was quite real indeed, and after playing on her team every night for a couple months in another, lesser game, brought her onboard.  I understand that her boyfriend chose to be on Gabriel’s team, which, you know, maybe not a strategic choice.  If I had the choice between a golden chariot and a coffin, I would opt for the former.  I’m the chariot in this metaphor.  And Gabriel is the other, bad thing.

Kris Straub is an incredible creator, as evidenced by his ongoing work at Chainsawsuit, Broodhollow,  and the startling video output at Chainsawsuit Originals.  But he is also an incredible destroyer - no doubt because, with such intimate knowledge of the act of creation, the reverse comes so naturally.  Perhaps too naturally.  Will he be a danger, even to his own team?  He’s an evil force I can barely control, but I’ve decided to take the risk.

My Fifth Horseman is not something I am prepared to reveal yet.  Basically all you need to know about him is that he will draw his scythe across the earth, and reap a terrible harvest.  He is also pretty good at Gears of War.  You mighta heard of him.  In fact, I guarantee you have.
