Let's deal with the second one first: I think it's incredibly silly stuff. And what's more, rage-bait has a way of becoming canonized, calcified, because the revolution must always act at the edge - the frontier - where experimental rhetoric bakes into ideology. Whether it's meant authentically or not, goofball adherents have already internalized it. It's simply a premonition of some future battle. As for the first contention, that we don't want to inadvertently glorify it, well, you tell me. I'd be surprised if it did!
The wastrel brood and I agree that people are putting their politics into their work, and doing so in an amateur, artless way. It would be ridiculous to suggest otherwise, it happens all the time. And the sort of person in a position to offer an arts grant agrees with those politics. As do I! But the smug, self-satisfied, presumptive way they tend to do isn't capable of delivering its social payload to anyone who isn't already an acolyte which is where my different, richer, more noble position has its root. I've already discussed this. Propaganda is an artform. I'm not seeing much art.
Generally, the people who make tactical insertions of their politics - regardless of their polarity - aren't subtle about it. They are engaged in a Holy War; of what use is constraint? I don't think that Gas Giant depicted in the cover for Halo: Combat Evolved is gay, no matter how much we at Penny Arcade would love to explore that concept at turgid length. As for Master Chief himself, John-117, my understanding is that while "participants" in the SPARTAN-II program are capable of sex, this drive is often suppressed in an effort to keep them on mission. So, even if he were Bi, biochemically, he's ninety to ninety-nine percent war eunuch. It's mostly mommy issues with him. You gotta take your wins where you can get 'em, boys.
