Wheel Saint is a new idea with some old roots. One of the first comic book characters I ever created was a teenager named Sam who had an Angel imprisoned in him. I apologize but I was 16 or 17 when I cooked this up.
I dug through a box of old artwork and found some of my early sketches of Sam. This first one is from 1995 (the year I graduated high school) and was probably one of my first drawings of the character.
This next one is from 1998 which is the same year we started Penny Arcade. If you look at the design it’s easy to see that Sam sort of became Gabe and Tycho.
It was a lot of fun to re-imagine this angsty angel teen almost 30 years later! If you need more Wheel Saint in your life, here’s a nice high res image of Sam in his 1989 Ford Taurus SHO:
