The Cool Of The Pool
When we actually made the comic, there wasn’t any pictures of the Goddamned thing. It was actually a piquant observation! Now everybody’s talking about Okao Vision or some shit, and the video has receded in importance. I would certainly like to see a device that does these things; I’ve seen truly striking, glasses-free 3D rendered with just a couple IR reflective stickers, so I’m fairly confident that it can do things like this with ease. But when people start using terms like “Prime Data,” it begins to stir the soul.
When I try to write about Wildstar, I get stuck in a sort of spiral. I don’t really know where to start, because everything refers to some other part. It’s interlaced in a way that reinforces everything. We did that charity tournament a couple weeks ago at Card Kingdom - The Gauntlet - and one of the rounds was a game called “Suspend.” I don’t know how to describe it. Maybe it’s “Reverse Jenga Played With With Heavy Wire.” I wasn’t super good at it. But the team from Geek Girl Con made this… thing with the pieces, a thing so coherent that it ceased to be pieces and was in fact a kind of knit or mesh. I could push down on it with both hands and it would support the effort. I couldn’t make sense of it.
Wildstar is like this, also. You get loot that wouldn’t even be loot in another game, called Decor. You take this loot up to your House, a slab of free earth floating on an antigravity platform, and you put it where you want inside your house or outside. Or, in my case, on the outside of my house; I had a little weedy shrub thing that I thought would look cool growing out of the nose of my spaceship house -like the ship had been there so long it had gone to seed. There is an aesthetic aspect, but great items increase the amount of rest you get when you log off at home, which feeds into the questing systems. I also have plots of land at home that generate crafting resources, which I harvest and then bring back down to craft and quest. Which generates more of both.
So where do I even start? At what point of the spiral do I bring you in, and begin to chart it? Who knows. Maybe I’ll figure it out if I log in and play this instant. I think my crops are ready, anyhow. (CW)TB out.
