For what always felt like a one-off experiment, Splatoon has had a long and successful career of being The Weird Kid in the family. If you have a child on the spectrum, there is a chance that you know a lot about Splatoon. In my experience, they're often ready to detail things for you. I suspect there's something about growing up feeling like an alien that makes this hyperpop, alternate-earth music video feel like home.
You never know how these things are gonna go. I thought Splatoon was really neat when it first came out, it had tons to do, and hints of a really troubling story underneath the ocular assault. I guess there's a world where it was another experiment like ARMS, but I wonder if the initial producer on the game doesn't have some pull - he has a fascinating pedigree - but ultimately if your weird paint shooter about mutant squid children sells thirty million copies over three games I guess they let you do whatever you want, including making an un-numbered pseudo sequel.
Gabe liked these but never went too deep before this one; now, he's lost it. Eventually in keeping with their seafood theme, each game became something of a buffet. A Splatoon Product would have a lore-packed single player campaign, the famous Turf War PvP with ongoing content, and then eventually the Salmon Run co-op PvE. It's ridiculous; breadth like this recalls Splinter Cell in its prime. I'd heard that Splatoon Raiders was a single-player focused title, but that terminology is a little confusing here.
In collectible card games or wargaming, the term "multiplayer" is used to denote games of three or more players even though you alway play these games with at least one other person. In Splatoon Raiders, it means that it's the first title without Turf War. Turf War, it must be said, is one of the sweatiest competitive shooters I have ever played in my life. The dynamics are similar to Smash Bros, where you think shit's gonna be sweet and it ends up being street. I always preferred Salmon Run. So, for me, it's basically unchanged.
Except the core is now hooked into ink-fueled looter shooter loop, where you eat perfectly bite-sized gameplay snacks and get incredibly hungry for the next one. Oh! And you fight mutant fish. It's basically the perfect game.
(CW)TB out.
