The Cacophone

I mean, it's some very PC shit, honestly. I'm sure that in Destruction AllStars, it sees the controller as both a Speaker and a Microphone and just maps them. As a practical matter, though, we haven't had to put up with shit like this in multiplayer games for… man. It's been a minute.

Gabe says that once you turn off this unique functionality the game is "fine." Ordinarily I could give or take a free game for a system I don't own, there's no case here that overlaps with my life in any way, except that it's made by Lucid Games which is to say it's made by the scions of Bizarre Creations. Project Gotham Racing, Geometry Wars, The Club, Blur, even going back to The Killing Game show as a formative experience on the Amiga, that's all my shit. I'd have to see it for sure.

The Steam Game Festival is up now, and it couldn't have come at a better time. We partnered with them on something like this for PAX Online - essentially, it runs until the 9th and is a platform for demos and developer streams. What it is in practice is one of those sampler boxes where you can gorge yourself on exactly what you like and leave the box in ruins. The Roguelite Deckbuilder Era continues apace, and there are many examples of that dynamic in play - one I checked out this morning was Roguebook, a take on that space that's a collaboration between the creators of Faeria (which is fucking rad) and Richard Garfield, creator of Magic. Yeah, like "Magic: The Gathering" type Magic. His collaborations are, on balance, really good even if Artifact was… you know, Artifact. I don't consider this demo optional or a nice to have for people who like the genre, I consider it a go and get it now.

Also grabbed Potion Craft, Despot's Game, Loop Hero, Almighty: Kill Your Gods, and Triversal. I haven't really had a chance to play them yet, so hopefully there's not a bunch of, I mean, I don't know. Like, 5G Vaccine shit or something.

Lab Rat is another one I got, which is funny because I just applied for the beta when I could have just waited two days and then… clicked on something. I only knew about it because I'd just bought Kine from the same developer, Chump Squad. It's got potent Portal vibes, cool writing, and some novel meta concepts. I wonder where they'll go with it.

(CW)TB out.
